Eckhart Tolle says “you are not your mind”. But who are we if we are not our thoughts and sense of self? If all the layers of mind or ego (the “I”) drop away, like in deep dreamless sleep, then we cease to exist. So this seems to be an unanswerable question, at least as long as we perceive ourselves as separate and judge what comes into our awareness through our senses. But what if we see ourselves as relational beings? What if we perceive our inner and outer world and as it is, moment to moment without labeling or judgment?
