In this week’s group, we will explore “idiot compassion”. You will learn the difference between authentic compassion, which means “to suffer with”, and leads to actions to support others in reducing their suffering by “getting their act together”. In contrast, idiot compassion is the act of giving people what they want because we can’t bear to see them suffer. Instead of helping others to get out of their situation by helping themselves, we feed them more poison, or at the very least, don’t take it away from them. This is not compassion at all! It’s selfishness, as we are more concerned with our own feelings than attending to our friend’s actual needs.
